Its architectural and historical values are of local, regional, national, and international importance. By its location in the center of the lively historic district, the area surrounding the citadel is considered as the most promising for future tourism development in the city of Aleppo. In order to consolidate this function, the formal general land use plan of the old city of Aleppo that has been elaborated in 1996 and approved in 2001 dedicated this zone for tourism use. Later in 2005, the area was subject to a detailed land use study that has been prepared The Agha Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC).Based on the results of this study, several physical improvements have been carried out in the area, i.e. the renewal of the technical infrastructure around the citadel, the implementation of the place in front of the citadel entrance and the enhancement of the location/presentation of the coffee shops, the creation of a pedestrian zone by cutting the through traffic, the replacement of the fence of the moat, the consolidation of the walls of the moat and the greening of the resulted slope. These improvements have led lately to a boom of tourism facilities in the area. Several caravanserais have been restored and reused, a five stars hotel has been established, and several hotels -including a luxury hotel- are planned. Nevertheless, according to the prevailing development trend -especially in the southwestern area- threats of “disneyfication”, mono-functionality and loss of economic diversification coherence are to be prevented. However, the area surrounding the citadel has a great potential for further development as a historic, touristic, cultural, recreational and service provider center. The upgraded urban space, the pedestrian zones, the historic buildings as well as the upgraded moat are key elements in assisting this development. Accordingly, several improvements related to areas such as physical and functional, general services, and recreational could to be carried out in the near future.

The Soul of the Old City Workshop

Who doesn’t remember a visit to the bazaar in the old city of Aleppo…the crowded streets, the colorful fabrics, the wonderful smell of the spices, the fantastic taste of sweets, the large variety of products, the musical sound of workshops, the hospitality of shops’ owners and the comfort of shopping? A journey full of emotions and a basket full of purchased goods…Back home to your daily rhythm of life, every pinch of spices put over the food carries you with its fragrance to the spice market, every bite of sweets brings the smell and the image of the trays of baklava placed on the counter of the sweets’ shops, every copper decorative objects fills your years with the pleasant sound of the copper market, every silk scarf over your neck reminds you of the process of printing on fabrics, and every day you live a new experience that triggers your senses, activates your memory and flies you once again to the bazaar and its commercial activities “the soul of the old city”. An experience that cannot be influenced by shopping in the city or in the new malls, where life tempo forces you to buy your needs as quickly as possible, losing the pleasure of shopping and after shopping sensations. Nevertheless, most people still don’t go to the old bazaar to buy their needs and accordingly, don’t have any idea about the enjoyment of shopping in it. Therefore, the workshop aims at supporting the economic/commercial activities in the Old City of Aleppo by promoting the intangible dimension of shopping in the Old City. The overall idea is to write about or film some of the commercial activities that play on the cords of the human 5 senses. The workshop took place on 12th of October 2010 at 10 o’clock in the Directorate of the Old City of Aleppo (Wooden Room). Participates were actively involved to make the Old City a place in which people -especially the young generation- would be encouraged to enjoy the experience of shopping in it and to feel the sole of the old city.

The Opening of the Archive Exhibition

Under the patronage of H.E. Measuring around 60ha the zone is located just outside the ancient western walls of the old city and the river Qwaiq to the south. Aleppo’s “Conservation and Development Plan” defines the area as a zone in transition where both conservation and new urban development interventions may take place. Two strategic projects that are supported by GTZ have been identified to initiate the transformation of the area to become the new city centre of Aleppo. The first one aims at creating a public square of 3.5ha in front of Bab Antakia that will lie at the core of the new centre as well as at the entrance to the old city and the traditional souk. Planners from Stuttgart and Berlin have supported the Directorate of the Old City of Aleppo (DoC) to elaborate the urban design concept of the square. The DoC is currently drafting the implementation plans and tender documents. This Project is scheduled to be realized in two phases, the first of which is scheduled for the 2nd half of 2011. The construction of this central urban square is one of the largest projects in the City of Aleppo that will be crucial for the development of the central district. The second project, which is closely linked to the first, consists in dismantling the so-called “French Wall” located immediately to the north of Bab Antakia in order to expose the ancient city fortifications and to cater to safety needs. The implementation of this project is planned for 2011.

From time immemorial, it has been sought after, valued and traded, its presence extending to the four corners of the world. Synthetic indigo was manufactured for the first time in the mid 19th century and soon supplanted the natural product. Along with many other colors made chemically, the synthetic version was so much cheaper and easier to use than the one provided by nature that the use of natural indigo was severely reduced. However natural indigo was not totally forgotten; on the contrary, it continued and continues to this day to exert its unique appeal, fascinating new generations of artists and craftsmen, who perceive a fragment of their universe in the radiance of the natural pigment. Nasser Soumi is among those artists who are fascinated with indigo. This natural material, deeply hidden in his subconscious, has for many years now taken him towards new worlds and faraway horizons. The deep blue color, a unique bridge between sea and sky, has helped him revive the dialogue of mysteries. His work reveals also a passion for archaeology and history as well as for messages that testify to our time: writings, signs, symbols, objects, various materials.Memory of Indigo will take place at the Amphitheater of Aleppo Citadel on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of September 2010.A special live show will take place at Shibani building from the 14th till the 22nd of September from 17:00 till 20:00 every evening. for more details please see the attachment.

Interaction Training Workshop

Under the agreement signed between the Aleppo City Council and the Syrian European Business Center “SKILLS”, an interaction training workshop was offered to the volunteers working in Madinatuna project, the training has taken place in Municipal Palace from the 9th till the 12th of April 2010 in the training hall. The training which was supported by the British Council focused on developing the young volunteer’s skills on the field of development processes, as well as preparing them for a future leading role to drive their community effectively toward a positive transformation in their society.
